Steyr 1890 88/05

I originally purchased one the the CenterFire Systems rifle with hopes of returning it to shootable condition. That was not to be as the barrel had ring in the last inch and the bolt heads were unobtainable. It has been hanging on the wall for years. A couple of weeks ago I was at a gun show and found the above mentioned rifle missing the stock, rear sight, and lower band. This one had been converted to the 1905 standard and was in good shape. It had been modified with the full magazine conversion. I removed the rear sight from my rifle and silver soldered the sight on the new rifle. I managed to find (on this site!) pictures of the stock relief for the cartridge holder and modified the stock to fit the new rifle. I look forward to trying it out real soon.

I have one '88 that i have fired several times with commercial 8mm ammo.  It hits a good 18" or more high @ 100 yds.  Is there a replacement front sight I can get to drop my impact point to the aim point?

Hi I am new the world of antique guns and therefore ask a lot of questions. I saw this carbine listed on gunbroker and wondered if some more informed memebers would advise buying a gun like this.

Thanks in advance for advice.

First of all, I'm new here, Hello to everyone.
Second, If this has been covered before, I don't mean to "beat the dead horse"
Third, I know all of you are going to request pics, I don't have any right now I have to dig the rifle out from the back of the safe again.

Ok. here goes I'll give you the info I have. The "Turk" in question is an 88, I've been collecting awhile and know the differance.
This one does not have the full wood
Does not have the barrel barrel sleeve
Does in fact have turkish markings on the top of receiver.

Ok here's the strange part, it does NOT have the date stamped on the reciever like the 1935's do, as a matter of fact, there is no date stamp at all anywhere I can find
There is no "S" stamp, it IS stamped 7.91 on the left side of the reciever,
Left side of reciever is number stamped 12092, left side of the rear sight numbered the same.
The enbloc drop port on the bottom of the mag well is still open and has not been...

Hi. I teared her apart for cleaning (maybe a new layer of chrome in future as well) and reblueing. Stock is bad - need newone (I know - simplest way would be to make one).
I really would like to know how much it is worth? I do have strong belief that this gun is worth a little "extra" (nice serial number and numbers are matching)

Bottom band of a Gew88 I believe to be non-refurb.  All matching but bolt.

"B.10.R.14.212."

I *think* it means 10th Bavarian Infantry Regiment, 14th Kompany, Rifle No. 212 - is that right?

Buttplate is stamped "J11".

I think I have a 88/14

Gentlemen,

I was on another forum and a member was showing pics of his new 88/05.  In his post he mentioned the rarity of the 88/14 and described the differences.

As I was mucking around with milsurps tonight I took a look at mine and believe one of them is an 88/14.  I never considered it "rare".

It is the bottom one in this quick pic I took tonight, an Amberg 1893.  If you let me know what to look for/focus on, I can provide more detail and pics.

I've been a member of Bill's board for over 11 years and haven't ever had anything to post on this board till now. I have been looking for a nice Kar 88 and found one while on vacation with wife. The rifle is absolutely all matching as made at Erfurt in 1894.  The SN is 802X F. Only mod is the "S" stamp on the reciever ring. Every piece is matching numbers, even the screws have the 2X on them. The metal is very nearly perfect with 80% blue changing to light brown patina. Bore is greasy and dirty and I ran a patch thru and it just about cleaned it out, soon it will shine. There is little I can add as I am not yet back home except the Unit Marking on the nosecap is (B.3.Ch. 3.79. ) So I believe it was issued to 3rd Chevauleguer (Light horse Cav.) Rgt., 3rd Troop, weapon #79. I almost feel like I could contact the family of the individual Trooper this was  originally issued to!! I will add photos when i get home...

KAR 88 - Opinion on rifle appreciated

My brother in law wants to sell his KAR 88 his family has had for some time.  If you can provide any advice on the rilfe (i.e. modifications) and opinions on value, it would be appreciated.

There is surface pitting on the barrell, some arsenal repairs have been done and the rifling is very faint.  The rear sight is missing and it looks like it spent allot of time in a closet.

I just ordered one of the rifles from OWS. It should be home soon but unfortunately I wont be until Thanksgiving as I'm active duty Army. I was just curious as to what I can expect to come as far as weapon condition and what can I expect from OWS as far as customer service is concerned. I'm aware it will be a beater but Im looking for a good project. I've already got a bolt coming, too. Any input is appreciated.

I got curious - a dangerous thing - and ordered one of the $69.95 GEW 88s from Old Western Scrounger. They implied they were beat up, and they weren't kidding. It appears to be a GEW 1888 in original configuration.

The stock is essentially complete, but has a fairly serious and ugly crack in front of the barrel band from some trauma that has also punctured and cracked the side of the barrel shroud. The crack runs most of the way through the stock. The wood is covered from head to toe in dings and gouges.

The receiver has been pretty thoroughly scrubbed, only the (very worn) serial number is visible. The bolt, rear sling swivel and rear sight slider are missing (as advertised). Also missing is the cleaning rod. The right side of the rear sight has been smashed inwards. The bore appears clean, sharp and surprisingly shiny.

So it's pretty much a wall-hanger - as I expected. I need to disassemble and see how bad the...

Just picked up a gewehr 88/05 and have some questions.

Hey all, just got a turked 88/05 and have a few questions. First off I will say this rifle is pretty neat! Picked it up at a local pawn shop for $200 and I am very happy with it. It is a Amberg 1890 and in surprisingly good shape for being 122 years old. The wood is dry so applying blo to help with that. Bluing is. also in nice shape, the barrel looks as if the thing was hardly used. Now for my questions I slugged and it measures at. 318 so it has to be the original barrel. Is there anyway I can reload for this with out getting custom dies? I am an impatient person and I don't feel like waiting three months to shoot it. My other question is for reloading what type of loads and powder should I use I understand from researching that it should be kept below a certain fps. So what kind of recipe should I use. Thanks for the help guys........... Mike

Hi Guy's,

I posted the following questions in the Mauser forum thinking that was what this rifle was. I now stand corrected, but still in need of some info. I will try to post pics of the rifle as soon as I get my camera charged up. A buddy I hunt with gave me this little carbine and I would like to find out more about it. I have never seen a rifle with so many markings on it. This one is serial number 3893 and every piece of steel on this thing is marked with the same numbers. Even the ladder sight is marked with the serial number. It has Erfurt 1893 with a capital S above it. At the top of the receiver under the serial # there is a lower case "g" and beside it a "Kr". The muzzle has regimental markings B.2.Ch.4.51. It has Kar 88 on the side. If anyone has info on the regimental markings, possible manufacture date of the rifle and what the various letters stand for, it would be much appreciated. I don't think it has been fired or handled very much over the years...
